Matthew 17:20 – “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
I can remember countless times in my life where things haven’t exactly gone the way I planned. I’ve prayed desperately, asking God to move in my life. During these times I’ve thought about what Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 about the mustard seed of faith and wondered, surely, a mustard seed is so tiny, how could I not have at least that much faith? I’m sure Jesus was sitting up in heaven wondering how I could so blatantly have missed the point. It’s taken me a few years and some unanswered prayers to figure out that that teensy tiny mustard seed isn’t about how much faith we do have it’s about the faith that we don’t.
Confused yet? Allow me to explain. You see, Jesus knows we are naturally a people who tend to be lacking in the faith department, in fact, he specifically addresses us as ‘ye of little faith’ numerous times throughout his ministry. And while it goes without saying that having a mustard seed of faith is nothing to brag about this I believe this is exactly the point that Jesus was trying to make here. Our faith alone won’t get us very far, but it’s when we allow Jesus to step in and fill those gaps of faith or lack thereof when mountains really start to move. He wants us to depend on Him because the good Lord knows we definitely can’t do it without Him. Now when I pray through hard times I simply say, ‘I am putting my faith in you dear Lord, that your will be done just as you intended.’
